Detroit Symphony Orchestra
21 Jul2017
Friday
Detroit Symphony Orchestra will perform at 7:30PM on July 27th in Chongqing at Shi Guangnan Grand Theatre off Nanbin Lu. This is its first oversea trip over 16 years, according to Detroit local news.

For 18 days, theyll make their way around Japan and China, performing in concert halls and factories, visiting sister cities from Tokyo to Chongqing. A group of DSO musicians is scheduled to play at a Ford Motor Company assembly plant in Chongqing.

This is a concert tour, says Detroit Symphony Orchestra President Anne Parsons. But it is also an ambassadorial venture for Detroit and for the state of Michigan. I think were there to represent all of them. And more.

The tour may be an important occasion for reinforcing economic ties. But at its heart, it is about sharing the musical arts.

And in that regard, this is likely to be an extraordinary tour. When most orchestras go on tour, they trot out concerts built around the traditional orchestra repertory. You know Beethoven, Brahms, Tchaikovsky, perhaps a little Mozart. DSO's tour is also a relationship building tour with its sister cities.

DSO will perform The Dream of the Red Chamber, a full-length work by Chinese composer Wang Liping.

Not only is it extremely unusual for a non-Chinese orchestra to play music by Chinese composers, but this particular piece of music is beloved by audiences throughout China.

Everyone in China knows and loves this music, says assistant concertmaster Wu. It was inspired by one of Chinas most famous novels. When I was about 16, the music was used as a theme song for a very popular television show. When the DSO plays this, it will make a very big impression on Chinese audiences.

Praised by international authoritative music magazine "Gramophone" as "miracle", The performer Lee attracted audience with interpretation and brilliant skills. He was cheered at the premiere of the concerto at the Carnegie concert hall in NYC. The New York Times claimed he is an excellent cellist... Shock all audience... extremely delicate emotional expression".

Lee is often invited to events and music festival in the world, including the United Nations Headquarters in New York, the Lincoln center, the Amsterdam Concertgebouw, the celebration of the Moscow Kremlin in Moscow, Kuhmo, Banff, Marlboro, Seoul spring and the Australian Chamber Music Festival.
