Forbidden City Palace Museum will open a branch in Chongqing on Nanbin Lu this October, across Chaotianmen. The director of Palace Museum visited the Chongqing site last year. This represents a major step for Palace Museum, the largest and most important museum in China, to celebrate the largest site which protected the most Chinese treasures in the Museum, also a step to bridge its ancient antiques with the modern arts.
The museum displays the history of Palace Museum antiques moved there during World War II.
The museum is located in a former Swedish company next to Ciyunsi, where over 4,000 antiques were stored during wartime, an official with the city's cultural heritage bureau told a press conference.
The items from the Palace Museum, also known as the Forbidden City, were moved to Chongqing in late 1930s when Japanese troops invaded Beijing.
During the Japanese bombing of Chongqing in the following years, the company placed a Swedish flag on the roof, which protected the building from being targeted.
After the war ended in 1945, the antiques were returned to Beijing.
The museum will have a collection of historic photos and also hold temporary exhibitions and regular cultural lectures in cooperation with the Palace Museum, said the official.
The Palace Museum Chongqing will become the art and culture center for art protection. This historical space provides a platform for cultural exchange activities, exhibition, art, business activities, promotional merchandise and other functions. Other activities can be held in Palace Museum Chongqing such as painting and calligraphy exhibition, lectures, art salon, providing the combination of traditional culture and modern arts.
